… He gives us His peace in return.
John 14:27 (NIV)
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
In context, Jesus knows what is about to happen. He knows He will be betrayed. He knows He will be mistreated, insulted, beaten, mocked, and handed over to be crucified. The One who knew no sin would bear the weight of sin and death for us.
2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV)
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Think about that moment. Jesus is fully aware of the suffering that lies ahead. The cross is not a surprise to Him. The pain, the humiliation, the rejection, and the crushing weight of the world’s sin are all before Him, all of it foretold by the prophets: David (Psalm 22; Psalm 69:21), Isaiah (Isaiah 50:6; Isaiah 52–53), and Zechariah (Zechariah 11:12–13; Zechariah 12:10; Zechariah 13:7). Yet in that moment He is not consumed with His own coming suffering.
Instead, He turns toward His disciples.
These men are about to face confusion, fear, and grief. Their teacher will soon be arrested. Their world will be shaken. And in that moment Jesus does something remarkable. He does not give them a strategy, a speech, or only a warning. He gives them a gift.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.”
This is not the kind of peace the world offers. The world’s peace is fragile. It depends on circumstances being calm and life going the way we want. When trouble comes, that kind of peace disappears.
But the peace Jesus gives is different. His peace is rooted in who He is. It is steady even when life is uncertain. It remains when storms rise, when fear creeps in, and when suffering comes.
That is why He tells them, “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
What a Savior.
Even on the night before the cross, Jesus is still serving, loving, comforting, and strengthening the people around Him. He is thinking of them before Himself.
Lord, help me grow into that kind of life. Help me to be that kind of husband, father, brother, and servant of the Most High. When life presses in, help me respond with the peace that only You can give.
Scripture reminds us of this same truth again:
Philippians 4:7(NIV)
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
This peace does not always make sense to the world. It passes all understanding because it does not depend on perfect circumstances. It flows from trusting Christ and resting in His care.
Church, when we bring our burdens to Jesus, He gives us His peace.
